Karishma Seeram | Academics and Community Service

Updated: Nov 21, 2024

From a young age, my parents and teachers inspired my passion for learning. I excelled academically, earning straight A’s from Year 7 onward, and graduating from Layman E. Scott Snr. High School with high honours. I sought opportunities to apply my skills in competitions like public speaking, debate, and robotics. I developed leadership skills as Head Girl and as VP of Marketing for Junior Achievement, where I promoted my team’s business. My commitment to service is reflected in my involvement with the Leos Club, Girl Guides, and the Cayman Brac Netball Club, Vacation Bible Schools, organizing beach clean-ups, and collaborating on projects like painting a mural honouring the National Heroes of the Cayman Islands. These experiences have enriched my skills and allowed me to contribute to my community meaningfully.

I have been recognised as: Best Salesperson in Junior Achievement, a graduate of the LEAD Programme, 1st place winner of the Conyers Debate in 2022, 1st place winner in the Optimist Essay Contest, 2nd place winner in the Oratorical contest. I graduated Layman E.Scott Snr. High School with 14 Level 2 passes as well as high honours. I received many awards including: Honours Graduate, Stand Out Award, Leadership Award, Prefect Award, Music Award, Outstanding Academic Achievement Award, Community Service Award and Tech Cayman’s Computer Science Award. I am most proud of achieving fourteen level 2 passes and being accepted into university. During the first year of my Associate’s degree in Computer Science, I was placed on the President’s List and the Dean’s List. Aside from academics, I secured a spot on the Cayman Islands National Netball Team for U-16 and U-21, representing Cayman in Dominica in 2023 and Guadeloupe in July 2024.

I am currently an undergraduate student at York University in Toronto, Canada completing my Bachelors in Computer Science. Studying overseas and being surrounded by many cultures and backgrounds encourages me to learn more about others. I am currently a member of the United Caribbean Islands Club and the Guyanese Student Council where I aid in planning and volunteering at different events, as well as promote others about the culture and raise awareness for many issues in today’s world.

A couple of interesting facts about myself are that I have represented the Cayman Islands for Netball twice. I also enjoy playing steel pan. As a Proud of Them Honouree I wish to give back to my community by continuing to volunteer and host different events for the community. I have had a great support system throughout my life, and I would love to be a part of someone else’s support system; anything is possible.
